Audience Analysis Cocoa Puff commercial 1960

Audience analysis 1960 commercial:

The audience of this commercial advertising Cocoa Puffs cereal in 1960 was young children around the ages of 5-12. The children were most likely diverse in background, and they were not educated on nutrition. It is assumed, like most children, that the majority of children love the taste of chocolate and eat cereal regularly for breakfast. Children of this age enjoy cartoons and animations like the cuckoo bird. This being said, the children will garner a unique interest in this commercial because of the cuckoo bird going "cuckoo for cocoa puffs". The reaction to this chocolaty cereal by the cuckoo bird, influences children to also have that passion and excitement for this particular cereal.

  1. A good start! So, two things--what makes you believe that this audience would be innately diverse? And, also, I wonder what the rhetorical drive is of this commercial? Of course, it has one, but I'm interested to see where you analysis takes it!

  2. I really like how you said, "...the cuckoo bird influences children to also have that passion and excitement..." I never really thought about that before. I really only ever paid attention to the fact that the slogan, "cuckoo for cocoa puffs" was repeated over and over again in a very distinct and loud voice that had kids be able to easily remember it. Good job!

  3. Why would the children inherently like "cuckoo for cocoa puffs"? I'm sure you have a reason, but I'm not really seeing it, so it would be something good to add. Other then that good job!

  4. I thought this was a good analysis and you touched on ideas that I would've never thought about like how his reaction would influence the same one in children. I also liked how you mentioned that the company assumed most children liked the taste of chocolate and they used that to assumption to appeal to children.

  5. I think you're right about the audience being young children. Any cartoon depiction of a crazy bird that provides enthusiasm and excitement to a product as simple as a breakfast cereal is sure to draw some attention. I particularly liked, (what amber said) the company had predetermined that a great deal of children must like sweets and chocolate.

  6. I liked this analysis, you really brought some great thinking into a commercial about cereal. A lot of your 8 Deas were spot on like how this commercials audience being children
